I have to give Jeremy props for the title of this song, which emerged during a late night bullshitting session at the “Dead House” on Locust St. in Fayetteville. I only discovered this mix this year, the only version I knew of before didn’t have the whispering vocals and actually had a sample of Diamond Dave singing “Wha-oh, hey you! Who said that?” But this is still pretty decent. The Let Freedom Ring CD was in heavy rotation at that house, and was a definite low-level background influence to this song. “If I Can’t Have Liberty” is just the tip of the iceberg with that CD. The “fuck it all” attitude of the Johnny Paycheck song and the hallucinatory country stylings of Johnny Bush seemed a nice counterpoint to each other, but really lead into the last track: Porter Wagoner’s “Rubber Room.” This album also saw a lot of time on the turntable in those days. So gather round the porch, pass that gallon of Carlo Rossi, and let’s heckle the neighbors…

Here’s another song I recorded along with some other stuff that inspired it. First up is Glad I Never by Sonic Recycling Program (that’s me). The first version of this song I heard was a Jesus and Mary Chain b-side and I assumed it was theirs, since it fit with their whole idiom. I don’t have a version of that, so next up is a similar take by Lambchop. Then there’s Hypnotize by Spacemen 3, and I obviously ripped their sound off wholesale for the backing track on the SRP song. And then we’ve got Lee Hazlewood doing the original version. I only heard this version maybe 5 years after I’d recorded my cover.
